Wimbledon 2010 Day 8: Clijsters v Zvonareva

Anyway… today was all about finally being able to drink in some of the pre-match atmosphere … for most of last week I was running all over to catch matches on show courts for an hour before taking to my seats… and today … we could just chill. We had no chance of making it to the few courts that still had headliners playing – and I’d dragged mum about enough last week – we just scoffed our way around Wimbledon today…
Café Pergola… Food Village … Ice Cream Parlour… ALL GOOOOOOD!

Oh yeah – tennis…

Mum had arrived while I was half way thru the Murray match the day before and was made up to see that Kim had come from a set down to dispatch Justine. She would have been proper grumpy had it been Justine! I have all the respect for her achievements ‘n’ all and in some way I would actually be curious to watch Justine play – but I too was happy enough to see Kim v Vera (and sadly not Lady “hop-a-long” JaJa)… I’d seen Vera against Wickmayer and had been impressed so thought this would be a decent match up – and we weren’t going to be disappointed.

Right at the start – good holds and great rallies – quality ball striking and painting lines/hitting corners – both Kim and Vera are more than capable at the net which mixed up the play nicely and the whole thing started nice and competitively.

There were chances for Vera to break on the 7th – Kim’s game suddenly became a lot more edgy but she eventually steadied the ship.
So much so that she broke Vera in the 8th – that saw Bepa starting with the thigh slapping in anger!
Kim held on to take that first set 6-3.

2nd set started the same – all square all round, and Vera at least started competitively after going down that first set by holding to love….
Kim started to leak UEs giving Vera a chance for a break on the 4th and she went up 3-1.
There was some awesome rallying on the 5th and they were really going at it – but vera consolidated the break to go up 4-1.
BUT – let’s remember who we’re watching people – Bepa choked a bit serving it out for the set, including a decent split after a slip on the grass…
And thus began the head-casey that we figured we’d see in this match – Kim had 2 very costly DFs and handed Bepa the set without her having to try and serve it out again! Bit of relief there!

Again all started square but Kim got herself good and broken in the 4th and Vera took the initiative and consolidated the break… again Kim just threw UEs hither and thither – and thus is was so…. Bepa hits up the Wimbledon Semis for the first time!
Ahhhh – that could SO have been JJ… but… moving on…..
